Lenten Devotion - March 16

(excerpted from free indeed: devotions for Lent 2017, Augsburg Fortress, Minneapolis)

The Creed - The Second Article:

What does this mean? (Continued)

He has done all this in order that I may belong to him, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in eternal righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as he is risen from the dead and lives and rules eternally.  This is most certainly true.

To ponder:

We love because it's the only true adventure.  - Nikki Giovanni, "Love: Is a Human Condition"

Created for relationship:

"To whom do you belong?"

This is a question I often ask young adults to help them think through their identity and the question of belonging.  To belong to God and to be able to articulate this reality leads to a different way of showing up in the world.  When we know that we were created for relationship by a relational God, we begin to understand the importance of interdependence.  We move from thinking solely about ourselves to thinking about our neighbours and the decisions we make.

Relationships are meant to be reciprocal.  Our relationship with God is no different.  We respond to who God is and what God has done because we love God and understand that relationships require effort.  We know that life is better when we are loved and when we love.  We know that life is best experienced in community - in spaces where we can share our fears and joys and questions.  We know that this life is meant to be lived in ways that build up the body of humanity.

Prayer:

God of all creation, help us to live in ways that are connected and to seek out ways of living and loving that model your relational presence.  Where there is separation or division, bring us closer.  Help us see the ways we fit together in order to reflect your divine image.  Amen.
